MLB's Jackie Robinson Day April 15th, 2014
Today we celebrate Jackie Robinson Day and I wanted to share a few thoughts about the impact of this incredible man and his contributions to baseball and the civil rights movement. This past year we had more African Americans get drafted to the MLB than any year before and we can thank Jackie Robinson for starting a movement that brought equality to the MLB. Jackie Robinson made history on April 15, 1947 when he became the first African-American to play in the all-white major leagues. Today established programs like R.B.I. (Reviving Baseball in Inner cities) bring opportunity to play the game of baseball to inner cities and children, mainly African American the chance to make it to the big leagues. In 1997, MLB retired his uniform number across all major league teams, #42; he was the first pro athlete in any sport to be honored in such a way. Jackie was a star athlete in college and also played in 6 World Series in his pro career, however he was largely known for his attributions outside of baseball. Not only was he the first black television analyst in MLB, but also the first black vice president of a major American corporation.
